FAQ
What is ISOFIX?
ISOFIX is an international standardized fitting system that has designed to provide a safe, easy, and quick solution to installing child car seats without the use of car seat belts. ISOFIX stands for International Standardization Organisation + Fixation and it makes use of two standard attachment points at the base of the car seat as well as an anti-rotation device, supported by either a support leg or top tether, for enhanced car seat safety.
How does ISOFIX work?
Since 2006, most newly produced cars have been equipped with ISOFIX anchorage points and some also feature a top tether anchorage point. The Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX bases work using the ISOFIX anchorage points in your car. These allow you to secure your ISOFIX base into the car, then you can simply attach your car seat using the ISOFIX points on the seat and check the indicators to ensure you've fitted the car seat correctly. ISOFIX helps to ensure a proper fit for your car seat each time as well as allowing you to easily remove your car seat from the car without the hassle of securing a seat belt every time. The ISOFIX base stays in the car so you only have to install it once, unless you want to use the car seat in another vehicle.
Where are the ISOFIX points in a car?
It's important to ensure that your car is ISOFIX compatible before purchasing an ISOFIX car seat or base. Most cars manufactured since 2006 have ISOFIX fittings but you check yourself if you aren't sure. Your car handbook should help you to determine whether your car has ISOFIX or you can locate them yourself by checking the rear seats. ISOFIX points are usually hidden in the joint between the back of the seat and the seat cushion and occasionally have helpful labels to help you find them. Some cars will also have a third ISOFIX point designed for use as a top tether.
How to remove an ISOFIX base
Removing an ISOFIX base varies depending on which base you have, but it usually involves pressing a button and disconnecting the base from the ISOFIX anchorage points. The base's user manual will usually contain a section that guides you through the installation and removal process so you can ensure you complete these steps safely and correctly.
Why choose ISOFIX?
ISOFIX offers a quick and easy installation solution which has been shown to provide unrivalled safety and protection in tests. ISOFIX has also been proven to dramatically reduce the risk of incorrect installation when compared to belted car seats of which up to 52% were found to be incorrectly installed in a survey conducted in the UK. While seat belted car seats are safe when installed correctly, many parents are now opting for ISOFIX due to its 94% correct installation rate.
Are Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX bases universal?
All Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX bases will fit in any car with ISOFIX anchorage points, so chances are a Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX base will fit into your car, but it's best to check first before you buy an ISOFIX base.
Maxi-Cosi Easy Base - is it ISOFIX?
The Maxi-Cosi Easy Base is ISOFIX however it also benefits from the addition of belted attachment, meaning that if you have one car with ISOFIX anchorage points, but another without, then the Easy Base gives you a versatile and secure way to fit your Maxi-Cosi car seat into both cars with ease.
Does every Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX base fit all Maxi-Cosi car seats?
No, not every Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX base fits every Maxi-Cosi car seat. There are different ISOFIX bases for different car seats, however there are some Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX bases that fit more car seats than others, such as the FamilyFix2 and FamilyFix3, which fit several Maxi-Cosi car seats. To work out which ISOFIX base you need to fit your Maxi-Cosi car seat, view our helpful infographic above.
